Hibernating bear paper roll craft graphic featuring a sleeping bear inside a painted cave with the words “hibernating bear paper roll craft” across the image.

There’s something extra cozy about a bear tucked away in its little cave for winter. This hibernating bear paper plate craft turns that idea into a simple hands-on project kids can paint, color, cut, and assemble.

It’s a fun way to pair crafting with a winter animal or hibernation theme, and the finished cave scene has enough little details to keep the project interesting without making it overly complicated.

How to Make a Paper Plate Hibernating Bear Craft

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Grab everything on the list above and lay it out, this one moves fast once you get started.

Step 2: Paint the Cave Colors

Paint the outside of the plate with gray around the edges and dark brown in the center.

Step 3: Blend the Paint

Blend the two colors where they meet to suggest a cave opening, then let it dry.

Step 4: Trace the Cave Opening

Print the bear and cave patterns, then trace the cave opening onto the plate.

Step 5: Cut the Cave Opening

Cut out the cave opening.

Step 6: Trace the Ground and Rocks

Trace a ground piece onto light brown cardstock and two rocks onto gray cardstock.

Step 7: Cut the Ground and Rocks

Cut out the ground and rocks.

Step 8: Outline the Ground and Rocks

Outline the ground with the brown marker and the rocks with the gray marker.

Step 9: Attach the Ground and Rocks

Glue the ground to the bottom of the cave opening and the rocks to either side.

Step 10: Color the Bear

Color in the printed bear illustration with crayons or colored pencils, skip markers here if you're using an inkjet printout, since the ink can bleed.

Step 11: Cut Out the Bear

Cut the bear out, staying just outside the drawn lines.

Step 12: Tuck the Bear In

Glue the bear into the cave, then add a few wavy brown marker lines nearby for cozy sleeping shadows.

All done!

Hang your finished hibernating bear craft up on display!
