No need to overthink it, this craft is as easy as it gets. You probably have most of this stuff hiding in your craft drawer already:

  • White cardstock (it holds its shape best, but regular paper will do in a pinch)
  • Brown and black construction paper (or whatever colors your little artist picks!)
  • White scrap paper
  • Black marker
  • Glue stick or school glue
  • Scissors (kid-friendly if you’re letting them cut)
  • A pencil for tracing
  • Free printable cow template

If you’re short on materials, don’t stress. Let your kid color in plain paper, or repurpose some paper bags. Quirky cows are the best cows.

Make It Your Own (Because No Two Cows Are Alike)

One of the best parts of this craft is how personal it can get. Let your kid’s imagination take over, this is where the magic happens.

Want a polka-dot cow? Go for it.
A cow with a bowtie and a monocle? Fancy!
A neon pink cow with heart-shaped nostrils? Please and thank you.

You can even build out a whole barnyard scene – add a paper sun, a red construction paper barn, or a grassy field of green scribbles. Or tape your cow to a popsicle stick and turn it into a puppet for farm-themed storytelling.

Learning Hiding in the Fun (Shhh, Don’t Tell Them)

This may look like just a cute craft, but it’s doing some serious heavy lifting when it comes to preschool development:

  • Fine motor skills: All that cutting, gluing, and tracing is great practice.
  • Following directions: Even when they “creatively interpret” them.
  • Imagination & storytelling: Especially when their cow has a name, a backstory, and possibly a secret mission.
  • Color recognition and shape building: Ears, spots, and tails oh my!

And if you want to sneak in some learning about farm animals? Talk about what cows eat, where they live, what sounds they make, or how they help us (hello, milk and cheese!).

This list of farm-themed activity ideas is perfect for building out a whole day of fun.

So trace those tiny hands while they’re still tiny, and let the crafting, and the mooing, begin. Because really, who wouldn’t want a cow with googly eyes hanging out in their kitchen?
