How to Make a Paper Plate Chicks in a Nest Craft

This chicks in a nest paper plate craft comes together with painting, cutting, and gluing. Follow the steps below to make your adorable trio of spring chicks.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Gather all the supplies for this paper plate chicks in a nest craft. Having everything ready before you begin makes the process smooth and fun.

A white paper plate sits on a wooden surface. Around it are craft materials: a small bottle of brown paint, a paintbrush, a bag of googly eyes, a hot glue gun, scissors, a black marker, sheets of yellow and orange paper, shredded brown paper filler, and orange feathers.

Step 2: Paint the Nest

Basecoat the inside of the paper plate with medium brown acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry and apply a second coat if necessary.

The paper plate is fully painted brown. A paintbrush rests on the plate, and the paint bottle is nearby.

Step 3: Create the Nest Shape

Once dry, fold the paper plate in half and score along the fold. Cut the plate in half — this curved half becomes your nest shape.

The painted plate has been cut into two curved halves. A pair of scissors lies next to them.

Step 4: Add the Nesting Material

Attach a generous handful of tan paper shreds to the inside of the paper plate nest using a glue gun and glue sticks.

TIP: Liquid craft glue also works — just allow extra drying time.

One half of the plate has shredded brown paper glued onto it. A hot glue gun is positioned nearby, and extra shredded paper sits off to the side.

Step 5: Trace and Cut the Chicks

Download and print the chick patterns, then cut out. Trace the chick body twice onto medium yellow cardstock and once onto light yellow cardstock. Trace the beak three times onto orange cardstock with a pencil. You could also use colored craft foam or craft felt.

Paper shapes are prepared: yellow oval shapes and orange triangle shapes are drawn or cut from colored paper. A pencil and scissors are visible.

Step 6: Cut Out All Pieces

Cut out all the traced pattern pieces with scissors, making sure to cut inside the lines for a clean, finished look.

Three yellow oval cutouts and three orange triangle cutouts are arranged on the surface. Scissors are nearby.

Step 7: Assemble the Chicks

Attach two wiggle eyes and one beak to each chick's face with a glue gun. Glue one orange feather to the top of each chick.

The yellow ovals now have added elements: googly eyes, orange triangle shapes attached, and small orange feather pieces placed on top. A hot glue gun is visible to the right.

Step 8: Place Chicks in the Nest

Attach the chicks to the nest with a glue gun, placing the light yellow chick in the center between the two medium yellow chicks.

Three decorated yellow oval shapes are placed on top of the shredded paper on the plate half. A hot glue gun is nearby.

Step 9: Add the Finishing Touch

Glue a small amount of tan paper shreds along the bottom of the chicks' bodies so they look like they are settled snugly in their nest. Add two nostrils to the top of each beak with a black marker.

The finished arrangement shows three yellow oval shapes with googly eyes and orange pieces, sitting on shredded brown paper attached to the plate half. Green decorative plants appear at the top edge of the frame.

Your sweet paper plate chicks in a nest craft is ready to welcome spring!
