How to Make a Paper Plate Patriotic Butterfly Craft

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Get everything from the list above within arm's reach before you dive in.
Step 2: Cut the Plate in Half
Fold the plate in half and crease sharply, then cut it in half with scissors to make two wing halves.

Step 3: Trace the Flag Pattern
Print the butterfly patterns, then trace a flag shape onto each wing half with a pencil.

Step 4: Paint the Star Fields
Paint the star field section on each wing blue and let dry.

Step 5: Paint the Stripes
Paint every other stripe on each wing red and let dry, adding a second coat to either color if needed. Getting the stripes to line up evenly on both halves takes a little care, so measure before you paint if you want them to match exactly.

Step 6: Cut the Body and Star
Trace and cut a butterfly body from light blue cardstock and a star from silver glitter craft foam.

Step 7: Make the Antennae
Bend the red chenille stem in half, curl the ends, then glue a blue pom pom to each curled end to form antennae.

Step 8: Attach the Eyes and Antennae
Add the wiggle eyes to the butterfly's face, then glue the antennae to the back top of its head.

Step 9: Stamp On Cheeks
Dip a fresh pencil eraser into pink paint and stamp a cheek on each side of the face, then let dry.

Step 10: Attach the Star
Glue the silver star onto the blue star field.

Step 11: Join the Wings
Attach the two wings together, then glue the butterfly body on top, centered over the seam.

Step 12: Draw the Smile
Finish with a black marker smile.
All done!
Your patriotic butterfly is ready to flutter!
