Let’s Talk Learning (Because This Craft Isn’t Just Cute)
Sure, your lion looks adorable, but this little project is doing some serious behind-the-scenes brain work:
- Scissor skills? ✅ All that cutting builds hand strength and control.
- Spatial awareness? ✅ Figuring out where to place each part helps develop layout and design skills.
- Emotional connection? ✅ Your child just turned their hand into a roaring friend they can name, talk to, and build stories around.
Plus, handprint crafts are basically growth charts in disguise. Keep them, frame them, cry over them in 10 years. You know the drill.
Bonus Fun: Extend the Activity!
Want to turn this craft into an entire morning of learning and play? Try these ideas:
- Roar and Tell: After making the lion, invite your child to name their new jungle friend and tell you a story. Where does it live? What does it eat? Who are its jungle BFFs?
- Lion Parade: Make lions in different colors…yellow, orange, even purple, and line them up for a jungle parade. Bonus points for marching music and dramatic roaring.
- Craft + Book Combo: Pair your lion craft with a story like “How to Be a Lion” by Ed Vere or “Lion Lessons” by Jon Agee. Then let your kid teach you how to be a lion.
- Zoo Theme Day: Combine this with our zoo animal crafts and create a whole zoo of friends. Tigers, elephants, monkeys—go wild!
So go ahead, trace those little fingers, cut that crazy mane, and let your preschooler’s roar echo through your kitchen (or at least the craft table). You’ll both be grinning like kings of the jungle by the time you're done.
