Octopus Handprint Craft
When you’ve got a kid who’s bouncing off the walls and pretending to be a sea creature (or maybe that’s just Tuesday?), this octopus handprint craft is here to save the day. It’s squiggly. It’s adorable. It’s ridiculously easy. And yes…it secretly sneaks in a bit of learning, too.
We’re talking fine motor skills, creativity, ocean animal awareness… and maybe even a little color recognition if you mix it up. You don’t need glitter or glue explosions. Just some paper, a few minutes, and a kid with at least one hand. Let’s make some underwater magic.
What You'll Need for This Handprint Octopus Craft
- Purple and white construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Black marker
- Purple marker
If your stash of construction paper is looking sad, don’t stress. Swap colors. Octopuses come in all kinds of shades, and in a preschooler’s world, neon green is a totally acceptable sea creature choice.

Instructions
- Gather your supplies.
- Start by tracing your child's hand on purple construction paper and cut it out. This will become the tentacles of your octopus!
- Cut out a large, rounded dome shape from the same purple paper for the octopus head.
- Glue the handprint behind the head so the fingers peek out from the bottom—perfect little wiggly arms!
- Cut out two large white circles for eyes and glue them onto the face.
- Use a black marker to draw cute oval pupils inside each eye.
- Use your purple marker to draw a happy smile and some jelly-like squiggles on the head.
- Use the same purple marker to draw suction cup circles on each finger (tentacle). Make them playful and fun!
- Let your octopus dry and then show it off!

Let’s Talk Learning
This isn’t just a paper octopus. Your kid practiced tracing (hello, pre-writing skills), scissor work (bye-bye, clumsy snipping), and got a fun intro to marine animals. You can take it even further and chat about where octopuses live, how many arms they have (trick question: they technically have arms not tentacles), and what they eat.
Want to stretch the fun? Pair this craft with a sea creature storybook, or make a full underwater scene by crafting fish, crabs, manta rays, or jellyfish too. You can even check out our full handprint craft collection to keep the creativity rolling, or swim over to our ocean activities and turn your living room into an aquatic adventure zone.
So grab the paper, make a mess, and dive into the fun. Your sea creature crew is waiting.
