How to Make a Paper Cup Pirate Hook
This pirate craft comes together with simple cutting, painting, and gluing steps. Follow the steps below to build your own pirate hook.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Gather all the supplies needed to create your pirate hook paper cup craft. Having everything ready before you begin makes the craft process much easier.
Step 2: Paint the Paper Cup
Paint the outside and bottom of the paper cup with black acrylic craft paint. Set the cup aside to dry completely and apply a second coat if necessary.
Step 3: Prepare the Cardboard
Flatten a cardboard box and cut it apart at the seams using scissors so you have a flat piece to work with.
Step 4: Download and Cut Out the Patterns
Download and print the pirate hook patterns. Cut out the hook and skull shapes with scissors so they are ready for tracing.
Step 5: Trace the Hook onto Cardboard
Trace the hook pattern once onto the flattened cardboard using a pencil. This will create the sturdy base of the pirate hook.
Step 6: Trace the Cardstock Pieces
Trace the hook pattern twice onto grey cardstock and trace the skull pattern once onto white cardstock with a pencil. You can also use construction paper, craft foam, or craft felt.
Step 7: Cut Out the Pattern Pieces
Cut out all of the traced pattern pieces with scissors, making sure to cut inside the lines for a clean finished look.
Step 8: Assemble the Hook
Attach the grey cardstock hook pieces to each side of the cardboard hook using a glue gun and glue sticks. This creates a finished hook shape.
Step 9: Cut the Cup Opening
Using scissors, cut a slit in the bottom of the paper cup that is wide enough for the base of the cardboard hook.
Step 10: Insert and Secure the Hook
Insert the base of the hook through the slit in the bottom of the cup. Bend the base of the hook inside the cup and secure it with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Step 11: Draw the Skull Details
Using a black marker, draw the outline around the skull and crossbones. Fill in the mouth, nose, and eyes of the skull.
Step 12: Attach the Skull Decoration
Attach the skull and crossbones to the front of the paper cup hook base using a glue gun and glue sticks.
Step 13: Add Final Decorations
Decorate the base of the pirate hook with self-adhesive silver rhinestones or beads. You can also wrap natural jute twine around the top edge of the hook for extra detail.
