How to Use the Space Lacing Cards
Step 1: Print on cardstock
Print the lacing cards on heavy cardstock. The set has 12 different objects to lace, so in a classroom you may need to print it twice.
Step 2: Laminate and cut
Laminate the cards so they last, then cut them out, leaving a little space around each object.
Step 3: Punch the holes
Use a single hole punch to make holes around the edges. Older kids can do the hole punching for extra fine motor practice.
Step 4: Tie off the string
Tie a knot in one end of a shoelace or lacing string, or tie a button to the end so kids know where to stop. If you use yarn, wrap the ends with tape so it acts more like a shoelace.
Step 5: Start lacing
Kids choose their favorite string (yarn, ribbon or a shoelace) and lace it through the holes. When they finish, tie the ends together, or pull the string out and start again.
Other Ways to Use the Space Lacing Cards
With younger kids, talk about the pictures. You have all of the planets, so you can organize them by size and talk about each of their names.
Think of lacing as process art. Kids may do it differently than you would, and that’s not wrong. Give specific compliments, like “Wow, I love the color string you chose.”
If they’re already great at lacing, have them lace in order around the image, lace “backwards” or try lace one, skip one.
