How to Make a Paper Plate Pirate Hat Craft
This paper plate pirate hat craft comes together with painting, cutting, and gluing. Follow the steps below to create your little pirate's perfect hat.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Gather all the supplies for this paper plate pirate hat craft. Having everything ready before you begin makes the process smooth and easy.
Step 2: Paint the Paper Plate
Basecoat the outside of the paper plate with black acrylic craft paint. Set aside to dry and apply a second coat if necessary.
Step 3: Trace and Cut the Hat Base
Download and print the pirate hat patterns, then cut out with scissors. Trace the hat base pattern onto the painted black paper plate and cut out.
Step 4: Trace and Cut the Remaining Pieces
Trace the hat brim onto black cardstock, the skull onto white cardstock, the scarf onto red cardstock, and the feather onto blue cardstock. You could also use colored craft foam or construction paper.
Step 5: Cut Out All Pieces
Cut out all the traced pieces with scissors, making sure to cut inside the lines for a clean look.
Step 6: Add Details to the Pieces
Use a black marker to outline the scarf, draw details on the feather, and draw the skull and crossbones features.
Step 7: Attach the Brim
Attach the hat brim to the hat base with a glue gun and glue sticks. TIP: Liquid craft glue also works — just allow extra drying time.
Step 8: Add the Yellow Trim
Starting at the top, attach a yellow chenille stem to the right edge and then the left edge of the hat base and brim to create a decorative gold trim.
Step 9: Finish the Hat
Attach the scarf to the back bottom of the brim, the skull and crossbones to the hat base, and the feather to the side of the hat.
Your swashbuckling paper plate pirate hat is ready for adventure on the high seas!
