Materials

  • 3 jumbo popsicle sticks
  • Blue acrylic paint
  • Blue construction paper
  • White construction paper
  • Black marker
  • Glue stick or tape

Tools

  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Gather your supplies and protect your workspace. Materials needed: scissors, blue paper, popsicle sticks, black marker, blue acrylic paint, and a paintbrush.
  2. Paint three of the sticks blue. Let them dry all the way...yes, all the way. Patience is a virtue. (Or just hit them with a hair dryer.)
  3. Cut one of the painted sticks in half. This will create the whale’s signature step-like forehead. One unpainted stick next to two blue painted sticks, one of which is cut in half.
  4. Lay the unpainted stick and the remaining full-length blue stick horizontally, then glue the three shorter pieces on top to form a blocky curve. This is your whale’s noggin. Popsicle sticks glued into a whale body shape.
  5. Cut out the tail, a top fin, and a side fin from the blue construction paper. Then cut a small white circle for the eye. Blue construction paper pieces cut into fins, tail, and a small white eye circle.
  6. Glue the tail to the back of your whale, the top fin on the top edge, and the side fin tucked underneath. Add your white circle eye. Construction paper parts glued to the whale’s stick body.
  7. Use a black marker to draw a happy little smile and a dot in the eye. Go for whale-y cheerful. Finished whale with a drawn eye and smile.
  8. Show off your new sea creature! Stick it on a bulletin board, pair it with an ocean unit, or let your kids swim it around while making the best whale sound effects they can come up with. Whale on display with colorful paper sea background.

Extend the Fun (Because One Whale Is Never Enough)

Now that your whale is grinning proudly, here’s how to turn this craft into something even more awesome:

1. Ocean habitat tie-in: Talk about where whales live, what they eat, how they migrate, or how big they actually are (hint: way bigger than your glue stick).

2. Group display: Make an entire ocean scene with other sea creatures like fish, sea turtles, and octopuses. Add bubbles, waves, and glitter if you're feeling brave.

3. Book pairings: Read “Big Blue Whale” by Nicola Davies or “If I Were a Whale” by Shelley Gill while your kids play with their new aquatic friend.

4. Dramatic play: Attach your whale to a stick or straw and turn it into a puppet. Create a full underwater story with whales, dolphins, and a villainous crab named Larry. (Your kids will run with it.)
