I'll never forget the giggles.

I could still tell you every word of these books, my daughter was so in love with them. We read them every day for YEARS.

Sandra Boynton has written over 50 board books for children. Each of them provides enough giggles to laugh your way through toddlerhood.

Every parent I know has a small collection of little Sandra Boynton books. Below is a list of our favorite to read.

I can't express enough how much we LOVE the silly irony, classic laughability, and versatility of these books.

You can read them quickly to smaller readers, and when they're older THEY can read these to you.

7. Blue Hat, Green Hat
This one reinforces colors and body parts. We spend time saying things like “Is that where we wear that? No! Silly turkey! Hats go on our heads!”

What a silly turkey, he wears different articles of clothing incorrectly, and it's a great way to get giggles.

6. Happy Hippo, Angry Duck
A delightfully simple book about moods.

We enjoy showing our angry face, happy face, and sad face right along with the cute little animals.

5. The Going to Bed Book
A great book to pair with your nighttime routine.

When my daughter reads this to me, she loves to add the things in from our routine, like getting swaddled and drinking some milk.

4. Doggies
This is a must for all the little dog lovers out there!

My daughter's first word was “pup pup” so she loves this book.

She loves counting the doggies too. Usually she just says “one two three four five six” as fast as she can regardless of how many of whatever she is counting there are. I just love it.

I think you will too.

3. The Belly Button Book
My sweet daughter loves to pretend that the little hippo is her brother, and he calls belly buttons bee bos because he is little too.

If you've never heard a tiny voice say bee-bo, you HAVE to get this one.

2. But Not the Hippopotamus
This is a must for every Sandra Boynton lover out there.

If there is one book that everyone should own, it's this one. The cute unexpected twists are just a barrel of giggles. Give this one a shot for sure.

And last, but most certainly not least is my favorite board book of all time:

1. Moo, Baa, La La La
If you do not have this book, you should do yourself a favor and go get it right now.

Then spend a week reading it to your child constantly.

Then, get out your camera and have them read it to you.

It's absolutely one of my favorite videos I have of my daughter. Another plus: For about a year, when asked what the piggy says, your child will say “la la la!”

Another humorous note, we moved recently and our board books were packed in a weird spot, so it took a while to get these back out.

When I got this one out I asked my daughter what three singing piggies say, and she yelled “WEE WEE WEE ALL THE WAY HOME MOMMY!” Equally adorable. I love my sweet lady.

  1. Such fun books! I love your reason for your number one. The one I see in most homes, though, is the Going to Bed book. I am partial to Happy Hippo – for no other reason that sheer silliness, with "But Not The Hippopotamus" a close second.

  2. We've checked out many of Sandra Boyton's books from the library over the years. They were always favorites of my kids'. Glad your daughter is enjoying them!

  3. When my son was little we had a huge collection of Sandra Boyton's books. We both have the text of The Going To Bed Book memorized because we read it so much. One of our other favorite books was Snoozers – the song at the end was so much fun to sing.

  4. You know , I don't think we have ready any of them, will have to get them for baby number 2 lol Thanks so much for your great recommendations on the Kid Lit Blog Hop

  5. We had a book that collected several of the stories. Six Sleepy Sheep, I'm Not Tired, etc. I wonder if it's still around. Maybe I should read it to my boys the last night before Eldest Son leaves for college 🙂

  6. My elder son was a big fan of Sandra Boynton's books, when he was a toddler (And, still he is). Your post brought so many good memories to me. Only book I am missing here is my son's most favorite 'A to Z'. (I almost memorized 'A for Aardvarks admiring, B for Beavers Ballooning'). From Kid Lit Blog Hop.

  7. Oh we love Sandra!! She's easy to read and has great pictures and fun rhymes!! She is one of my son's favorite authors!! Will also be easy when he starts learning to read!!

  8. Awww, I'm so glad to hear that! These memories we make with our children will last a lifetime. We are so blessed to have such great things to look back on. I'm glad this helped you reminisce. Someday I hope to do the same! 🙂
