Materials for a Spring-Themed Sensory Bottle

Before you get started, you will first need to create the colored rice. The prep is simple and can even be done the day before you plan to assemble the bottle.

You will need:

  • 3 cups dried rice
  • 1 cup measuring cup
  • Acrylic paint (blue and yellow)
  • Tablespoon measuring spoon
  • 2 resealable Ziploc baggies
  • Parchment paper
  • Cooking sheet
  • Plastic bottle with lid
  • Multicolored flowers
  • Funnel

Once your supplies are ready, it is time to color the rice.

How to Make a Spring Calm Down Bottle

This activity comes together in two parts. First you will dye the rice, then you will assemble your sensory bottle. Each step is simple and kid-friendly.

Step 1: Gather your supplies.

Measure out all materials so everything is ready to go. This keeps the process smooth and organized.

Step 2: Divide the rice.

Add 1 ½ cups of dried rice to each Ziploc baggie. You should now have two separate bags of rice.

Step 3: Add the paint.

Squeeze 1 tablespoon, or one generous squirt, of blue paint into one bag and yellow paint into the other.

Step 4: Shake to coat.

Seal each bag tightly, remove excess air, and shake until all the rice is evenly coated with paint.

Step 5: Prepare to dry.

Place parchment paper on a cooking sheet to prevent sticking.

Step 6: Spread the rice.

Carefully pour each color of rice onto the prepared sheet. Spread it out so it can dry evenly.

Step 7: Allow the rice to dry.

Let the rice sit for 2 to 3 hours, or overnight, until completely dry.

Step 8: Fill the bottle.

Once the rice is completely dry, use a funnel to add the dried colored rice and multicolored flowers into the plastic bottle.

Learning Benefits of a Spring Sensory Bottle

This spring sensory bottle supports important developmental skills through hands-on exploration. As children pour rice through a funnel and layer materials into the bottle, they strengthen fine motor coordination and hand control. Shaking and tilting the bottle encourages visual tracking as children follow the movement of the rice and flowers. The bright contrasting colors also support visual discrimination and early color recognition.

Sensory bottles like this one are especially helpful for self-regulation. The gentle movement of the rice creates a calming visual experience that works well in quiet corners, calm-down spaces, or independent play centers.
