  1. Gather your supplies. Supplies laid out: construction paper, glue stick, scissors, black marker
  2. Start by tracing and cutting out a handprint from brown construction paper. This will be your dog’s face and body.
  3. Cut out the dog’s ears, spots, eyes, nose, and mouth from the colored construction paper using the template or freehand if you’re feeling bold! Cut pieces: brown handprint, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, spot
  4. Glue the ears behind the top of the handprint so they peek out like floppy puppy ears. Ears glued behind the handprint
  5. Add a big black circle to one side of the face for the spot. Spot added to one side of the face
  6. Next, glue on two white circles for the eyes and layer the smaller black circles on top. White circles glued for eyes
  7. Use a black marker to add pupils inside the eyes. You can leave a white dot for that cute cartoony shine. Black eye design added
  8. Glue the nose onto the center of the handprint palm.
  9. Add the red mouth and white teeth underneath the nose to create a happy little grin. Nose and mouth glued on
  10. Draw on some whiskers and freckles with your black marker to finish the face. Whiskers and freckles drawn in

Let Them Make It Theirs

You know how every kid makes a snowflake totally different? Same rule applies here. Want to use yellow paper instead of brown? Go for it. Add a bow tie? Fabulous. Draw on a spot around the mouth too? YES. The more your little artist owns their creation, the more joy they’ll find in it.

And don’t forget to write the date and their name on the back. One day, that wobbly handprint is going to be a whole memory in itself.

What to Do With Your New Paper Pup

Besides hanging it up immediately? You can turn this into a storytelling moment. Name the dog. Invent its favorite snack (hot dog-shaped gummy worms, obviously). Create a mini adventure or turn it into a whole class of handprint pets.

And if your kids are really feeling the vibe, let them explore more animal crafts! You can check out all of our adorable handprint crafts here, it’s like starting your own little paper zoo.
